North Dakota, USA
Death: Aug. 12, 2014

Susan P. Briske passed away peacefully on August 12, 2014, shortly following her 95th birthday, at Valley Square-Woodside Village with the comfort and love of her large family.

Susan Matylinski was born the first of five children to Walter and Lillian (Mokerski) Matylinski on August 11, 1919, near Johnstown, N.D. She attended school in Johnstown and after completing the 8th grade, she lived with her grandfather Peter Mokerski near Ardoch Lake. This is where Susan met Steve Briske and they were wed November 23, 1939. Susan and her husband lived in several locations in the area before settling on a farm south of Ardoch, ND in the mid-1950’s. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Ardoch. Susan was the loving mother of five children, 14 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren, and she helped raise several foster children. Her nurturing disposition and love for life made her the center of the entire family and she served as a source of inspiration and guidance for her children. Susan treasured farm life and spent much of her time outdoors raising chickens, ducks and geese, growing flowers and tending to gardens. She earned the affectionate name of “flower grandma” in honor of her gardening abilities and for bringing flowers to church services in Ardoch. Susan provided eggs, ducks, geese, and down pillows along with heartfelt companionship to neighbors in the area. Family and visitors were often welcomed with the aroma and taste of fresh baked bread. Susan was an accomplished seamstress, making many items including clothing and curtains. Her memory and legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of many for generations to come. Susan moved into an apartment in Grand Forks in January 2005 after her husband’s death. In December 2011, she moved to Valley Square-Woodside Village where she remained until her death.

Susan is survived by her sister, Sarah Devine, Grand Forks, ND; sons, Bill (Kathy), McKinney, TX, Jim (Theresa), Grand Forks, ND, Dave (Barbara), College Station, TX and Ron (Diana), Churchville, VA; a daughter, Linda (Robert) Garber, Stuarts Draft, VA and 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; a sister, Elizabeth Erickson; brothers, Clem and Ted Matylinski; a grandson, Joe Briske; a grandson-in-law, Jim Bergum; a great-granddaughter, Grace Bergum and a great-grandson, Thomas DeLeon.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Historic Norman Funeral Home-Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Tuesday.
