Gilbert, a resident of Española and formerly of Cañones, was predeceased by his parents Salomon and Teofila Serrano; brother Dillon Velasquez Sr.; sisters: Viola Clegg and Nida Serrano; and brother-in-law Jesús Monroy.

Gilbert was survived by his sons: Mel Serrano (wife MaryJane) and Andrew Serrano; daughter Liza Serrano; brothers: Steven Serrano (fiancée Linda), Antonio Serrano (wife Cathy), Albert Serrano (wife Thelma), and Paul Serrano (wife Patsy); sisters: Clorinda Monroy and Dora Gwinnup (husband Leonard); grandsons: Andres Serrano (companion Suzanna), Brandon Serrano (companion Kimberly), and Roderick López; granddaughters: Andrea (husband Joel Eugarrio), Adriana Serrano, and Briana Serrano (companion Lucas).

Gilbert's love of life and caring disposition was beyond measure. He was that person that would help anyone and everyone he came across and was most definitely loved by everyone and touched the lives of many with his great sense of humor. As a young man he loved drag racing and won many awards. Alongside with his sons they participated at many of the drag races around the Southwest area. He was an amazing father to his 3 children. He was very much a part of each of their lives. He loved attending numerous softball games, baseball games, hunting and even babysitting! At a young age he moved his family to Denver and began his career as a machinist; then moved on to a concrete finisher & foreman, after that he became a very well known & respected mechanic. He was a true McGyver! He could fix anything! Gilbert moved back to New Mexico in 1973 and moved to Grants and worked in the Uranium mines as a Miller; then on to the drilling rigs as a heavy mechanic. Eventually, he moved to Española until his final departure. He is resting with the Lord our God, Mother, father and sisters in the Kingdom of heaven. He will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him.

Public visitation and Rosary were on 15 Jan 2017 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiú. Funeral Mass of Christian burial was on 16 Jan 2017 also at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiú.
