James was born in Fairview, Scott County, Virginia to William Thomas Browning and Hannah Elizabeth Looney. He was brother to Mac Browning, Alexander "Alex" Riley Browning, Infant Browning, Rose A Browning, Minnie Jane "Jane" Browning, and William Arthur "Arthur" Browning.

James married Catherine "Kate" or "Katie" E Farley about 1916 in Virginia. James and Kate had 5 children as follows: Della Marie Browning, Ralph M Browning, Iva Belle Browning, William "Bill" A Browning, and Gladys L Browning.

James died at Harlan Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky. His brother, Alex, was the informant on his death certificate.

This is my great uncle.
