Leroy Backwater Jr., of Kenwood, a barber, machinist and licensed minister, died Wednesday, Nov. 23. He was 61. He was born in Claremore, OK, the son of Leroy and Polly Johnson Backwater Sr. Leroy graduated from Jay High School and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Vietnam War, 1966-68. He worked for Heston Corp. as a machinist, attended school to become a barber and was a licensed minister and member of Leach First Baptist Church. He was married to Paula Kaye Middleton on Dec. 9, 1977 in Salina. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, making gig handles and Cherokee singing. He died at his home in Kenwood, OK. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Kenwood Gymnasium, under the direction of Shipman's Jim Green Funeral Home. The Revs. Utah Humphrey and John Gonzales will officiate. Interment will follow in the Johnson Prairie Cemetery Casketbearers will be Anthony Ross, Mike Ross, Rod Sapp, Nathan Six, Jeremy Scott and Darrin Budder. A Wake service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at Shipman's. Survivors include his wife, Paula of the home; his father, Leroy Backwater Sr. of Kenwood; his children and in-laws, Paula and Heath Waldrop of Siloam Springs, Kevin and Janet Backwater of Colcord, Amy and Bryan Harding of Muskogee, Holly Backwater of the home and Ben Backwater of the home; one brother, John Backwater of Kenwood; two sisters, Nancy Buckskin of Kenwood and Lou Ann Scott of Kenwood; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother; two sisters, Lula Budder and Joan Ross; and two granddaughters, Kaleigh Elaine and Kallie Dawn.
