James K. Brown was born 1846 to William T. Brown and Leah Frances Parker in Christian County, Missouri. His middle name is believed to be Knox. His family moved from Kentucky to Lawrence County, then Hardin County, Tennessee before finally settling in Oregon County, Missouri.
James was first married about 1871, likely in Tennessee, and the couple had three children -- John W. (1872), Mary (1875), and Sarah (1877), all born in Tennesse. This wife died between 1877 and 1880 in either Tennessee or Missouri, and James and the children returned to his parents' home to live for a while. James remarried in 1883 to Emily Alice, born September 1858 in Tennessee, and had four more children -- Willie (1886), Bettie (1889), Joe (1892), and Ella (1900), all born in Arkansas.
James died in 1901 in Fulton County, Arkansas, right across the border from Oregon County, Missouri. He was buried in a cemetery on private property, recorded as Brown Family Cemetery in FindAGrave; however, James Brown is the only Brown listed by name in that cemetery, which also apparently has quite a few unmarked graves.
