Crushed by a Log

A distressing accident occurred at the Empire Mills last Monday morning, in which Marian Amaral, a Portuguese, was so severely injured that his death is momentarily expected. A little past six o'clock on that morning, Amaral commenced to unload a truck full of logs. He inserted the clasp-hook in a large log, forgetting to remove his hand, which, when the pulling machine started, was drawn up close and held fast to the massive piece of timber. When the log had been partly turned the hook loosened and Amaral removed his hand and started to move away on his hands and knees. The log kept rolling down the hillside, finally overtaking Amaral, passing over his lower limbs and resting upon his hips. Ready and willing hands lifted the log off the horribly mangled and bleeding form of their co-laborer. An employee was dispatched to Sonora for a physician and Dr. Gould answered the call. His injuries were terrible, and the wonderment is, how he could survive an instant. The huge piece of timber that rested on Amaral's body was three feet in circumfrence and contained nearly a thousand feet of lumber. His left leg was broken in two places, his hips were crushed in and his internal organs injured so badly that neither skill nor nature can ever mend. He suffered excruciating pain until half-past three yesterday morning when death came to his relief. His remains were brought to Sonora and the funeral will take place to-day.
