Daughter of John Renfrew (1748 - 1834) of Glasgow (or nearby Paisley, Renfrewshire). Janet's mother died in Scotland and she emigrated to Lower Canada with her father, John, and her brother, Thomas

On November 4, 1834, Janet Renfrew married Robert Back (1811 - 1896), confectioner, of Quebec City

She died on July 11th, 1849, aged 36 years, and was buried from Chalmer's Methodist Church the following day

NOTE: From 1771 through 1860 (when it was closed), this cemetery was known as the "Protestant Burying Ground"; individuals from many of the Protestant denominations in the City of Quebec were interred here, including Methodists, Wesleyans, Presbyterians, Free Church, Baptists, and others, as well as the Anglicans whose chapel, St Matthew, was later built on the property
