A Fatal Accident at Reading Centre.
- A lamentable accident which resulted in the death of Perry Arnwine of Tyrone,a young man about twenty-two years of age, occurred at the Reading Centre station on the S.,G. & C. Railway, on Thursday last, September 18th. He had been visiting friends in Reading where be had resided for several
years previous to last season, and was about to take the Day Express for Dundee when the sad event happened. In order to reach the passenger train from the depot, it was necessary to cross a siding on which, unknown to him, a gravel train was backing up. He was struck on the shoulder by the rear dump, knocked about ten feet, and before he could get off the track, his right leg was crushed under the wheels and other painful wounds had been received. He was conveyed to the hotel at Reading Centre; Dr. Bartholomew was summoned, and at his request Drs. Hill and Harvey of Dandee were called. It was found upon examination that Mr. Arnwine's injuries were a bruised shoulder, a bad scalp wound, a mangled left leg, and a right leg which had been unjointed at the knee, completely crushed below and terribly lacerated above. The physicians in attendance amputated the leg within four inches of the body, but the patient lived but about twenty minutes after the operation. The funeral of the unfortunate young man, who was highly regarded by all who knew him, was bold at the Baptist Church in Reading Centre, on Saturday afternoon last; burial at Altay. The deceased leaves a sister, who lives at the home of G. L, Conklin, Reading Centre, and a mother who resides in Elmira. His father is not alive.
