Helen Bergan, age 98, of Watertown, SD passed away Monday, November 30, 2015 at Estelline Care Center.

NOTE DATE: Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2015 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with Pastor Janet Miller officiating. Music by Ross Jenkins as soloist and Marcia Jelsma as organist.

Interment will be at Goodhue Cemetery near Florence.

NOTE DATE: Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Wight and Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.

Pallbearers will be Matt Olson, Gary Byer, Pat Nogelmeier, Ron Bergan, David Bergan and Steve Zirbel.

Helen Jennette Olson Bergan was born to Ole and Mabel (Soreng) Olson on July 6, 1917 in Clark County on a farm near Bradley, South Dakota. As a child, she moved with her family to a farm near Florence, South Dakota. Helen attended country schools near home and graduated from Florence High School in 1935. She also graduated from Watertown Business University in 1937 and then was employed by Case & Case Law Firm.

Helen married Norman S. Bergan on June 25, 1938 at Florence. Helen was employed at the Codington County ASCS office (Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service) for about 25 years before retiring, 1963-1981. The couple farmed near Florence on the family farm that was homesteaded by Helen’s grandparents, until moving to Watertown in 1965. After 40 years together, Norman passed away in 1978.

Helen was a lifetime member of Goodhue Lutheran Church in Florence.

Helen is survived by her children, Mary (Daniel) Jenkins of Watertown, SD, Martha Karnopp of Watertown, SD and Timothy (Diane) Bergan of Barrington, IL; five grandchildren, Ross, Callie, Adam, Molly and Abigail; and five great grandchildren, Anne, Cole, Seth, Emma and Jack; her sister, Margaret (Bob) Bergan of Chula Vista, CA; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Olson of Watertown, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman; and her brother, Donald Olson.
