Funeral services for Joseph Irwin Monroe, 87, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in Jones United Methodist Church.The Rev. Harvey Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in East Ridge Cemetery under the direction of Syrie Funeral Home of Lafayette.Visitation is from 10 a.m. Saturday in the church.

Mr. Monroe died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, in a Welsh care center.

He was a native of Rayne and a longtime resident of Welsh. He worked at Welsh Medical Center for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Lee Monroe of Beaumont, Texas, and Ernest Monroe of Welsh; five daughters, Lorena Malveaux of Jennings, Celeste Simien of Lake Charles, Celestine Tyler and Willie Mae Tyler, both of Beaumont, and Mary Bell Jackson of Merced, Calif.; two brothers, Ervin Monroe of Rayne and Curly Monroe of Beaumont; 33 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Jones United Methodist Church, 302 King, Welsh, LA 70591, the family said.
