MARGARET S. PUTNAM
Margaret S. Putnam, wife, mother, grandmother, ranch lady and librarian, of Albany, Texas, passed away March 7, 2007. A funeral service will be held Friday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Albany with Rev. Jerry Kruger offi ciating. Burial will be on the Putnam Ranch with Godfrey-Neese Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Margaret Elizabeth Sheers, daughter of the late John McHenry (Jack) Sheers and Elizabeth Josephine McDonough, was born on July 20, 1910 in Houston, Texas. Her childhood years were spent in Humble, Texas City, San Antonio, El Paso, Fort Worth, Abilene, Denver, Colorado,Wichita Falls and Amarillo, where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1928. She attended West Texas
State Teachers College in Canyon,graduating in 1932 with a BA degree in English. While there she edited the college yearbook and had an article on the LS Ranch published in the Cattlemen's Magazine. In 1937 she received her Mastersof Library Science degree from the University of Illinois. Margaret began her teaching career at Panhandle High School in 1932, teaching English and serving as librarianfor seven years. The following three years she was librarian at Austin High School in El Paso and Amarillo High School. In 1940 she married rancher Joseph Carrol Putnam of Fort Griffin, Texas. For the next 67 years she was devoted to the ranch and its significant history. In 1944 she and her husband purchased summer property near Eagle Nest, New Mexico. For the next 63 years she was a vital summer resident of the Idlewild Community. Margaret joined the Albany Study Club in 1948. It was during her tenure as president in 1956 that the Shackelford County Public Library was founded. A trained librarian,she worked tirelessly for many years helping club members get the library established. Today the library is still operated by the Study Club and is a very important part of the Albany community. After her husband's death in 1970, she continued to operate the family's ranch. She was a racious hostess to all visitors who came to see the post-Civil War site, Camp Cooper, and the John M. Larn home and gravesite. She is survived by four children, Joseph Carrol Putnam Jr. and wife Jan Hart of Irving, Margaret Ann Putnam and husband Marvin Hale of lbuquerque, New Mexico, Julia Putnam of Albany and John Putnam and wife Rita of Albany; four grandchildren,Evelyn Hale of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Joe Putnam of Denver, Colorado, Sara Putnam of Odessa and Robert Putnam of Albany. She is also survived by one cousin, Lucille Blakeway of Elezbethtown, Pennsylvania. During the last years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by some wonderful care givers, Sherry Baker, Lavina Fink, Jacquetta Allen, Doris McCullough and Tammy O'Conner. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Putnam, Joe H. Putnam, Tommy Baker, Tom Belcher, Mike Martinson and Mike Stewart. Memorials may be given to the Shackelford County Public Library, First United Methodist Church or the Fort Griffin Fandangle Association.
