Mrs. Abell was born Sept. 14, 1920 in Winston-Salem, N.C. She graduated from Reynolds High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
Mrs. Abell married Dr. Leonard Abell a veterinarian serving in the Army upon his return from the Pacific Theater, on July 9, 1943. When he completed his military service, they moved to Rome, where they lived for 35 years. Dr. and Mrs. Abell retired and moved to Pfafftown, N.C. in June 1979. Dr. Abell passed away at their home in Pfafftown on Jan. 29, 2011.
Mrs. Abell was very active in the community as a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, the Grange, and the Garden Club.
She is survived her son Charlie Abell of Fairfax, Virginia; her daughter Sally Rieger of Bethlehem; her daughter Nina Borow of Williamsport; her sister Margaret Pittard of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her sister Iva Lee Workman of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Inurnment services for Mrs. Abell will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. Reverend Jeff Hamrick will officiate. Relatives and friends are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in the name of Mrs. Ruth Abell be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in Pfafftown, N.C.
