Barthelman was an agent for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. and resided in Los Angeles. On December 31, 1891, in that same city, he married Mabel Holden, and they were the parents of a daughter, Dorothea. After several unhappy years of marriage, Mabel secured a legal separation on the grounds of cruelty. On November 3, 1896, after arguing about custody of their child, Barthelman pulled out a gun and shot his estranged wife four times. She died a few hours later. Barthelman was eventually convicted of murder and executed by hanging at the Folsom State Prison. He was about 33 years old.
