AINSWORTH, Gilbert - 77, Halifax. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert Ainsworth on April 24, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Toronto on December 28, 1929, he was a son of the late Albert Ainsworth and the late Emily and stepfather Lou Grant. Gilbert passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Gilbert leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Catherine; and son, Timothy (Janice); daughters, Sharon (John) Gomes and Coleen (Mike) Drake; granddaughter, Sarah (Pieter) De Man, and grandson, Jason Drake, all of Halifax; sister, Betty Bond, Oshawa; brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Gilbert was predeceased by sister, Doreen Doucette; several brothers-in-law. Gil's spirit was positive, full of life and love. Gil had served on several ships during his 25 years in the R.C.N. and loved being at sea. He served in Korea in 1951 and participated in the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Gil loved gardening and cooking for his family. He also loved to read and do wood finishing and most of all family gatherings. Special thanks to the Cancer Clinic, the Palliative Care Unit and the VON. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., where the funeral service will also take place at 10 a.m. Friday, April 27, with a reception to follow. Interment will take place in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Gil's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or The War Amps.
