Rev. John H. Barney
The subject of this sketch was a son of John and Sarah Barney and was born at Warfordsburg, Fulton County, July 4, 1839, departing this life at the home of his son, J. S. Barney, in Clearville, April 3, 1915, at the age of 75 years, eight months and 29 days. Death was caused by a cancer at left eye. Deceased was married twice and was the father of three sons and three daughters, four of the children, together with their mothers, preceded the husband and father to the spirit land. Two sons survive to mourn the loss of their father, Josie S. Barney of this place and Prof. J. Willis Barney, a student in the Columbia University, New York City. One brother, Jacob Barney, of Greensburg, Kas., also survives. The deceased was for about sixty years an earnest loyal minister of the
Christian Church, preaching in Western Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, then in Fulton County and at Clearville where he had lived the last 22 years of his life. For eight years he was the postmaster at Clearville. He preached with power and his prayers were elevating and spiritual. He was full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. In the death of Rev. Barney the Christian Church has lost a staunch friend, the temperance cause a strong advocate, the community and upright citizen and the sons a kind father and wise counselor and the writer a warm friend.
