A celebration honoring the life of Erriah "Doll Baby" Godwin, age 70, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in Jehovah Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky McGee officiating and Pastor Theodore Anderson as eulogist. She will be laid to rest in Jehovah Cemetery.
Thursday, July 17, 2008, after a brief battle with cancer, Erriah crossed over to the other side. After learning of her illness, Doll Baby, as she was called by those who knew her, comforted loved ones with the words of the Apostle Paul, "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith ..."
Erriah was born to Jim and Dolly Jackson Pickens in the Newport Community, Aug, 29, 1937. She grew up in the community, attended grade school at Roosevelt, and graduated with the Class of 1956 from Central High School. She accepted Christ as Lord and Savior when very young and joined the saints at Jehovah Baptist Church, where she remained faithful in every department until her demise. Her ministry as an usher and a member of the choir will be sorely missed. She recently acquired three certificates from the Christian Education Department of the Chickasaw District Association.
She and Edgar "Billy" Godwin were married Nov. 8, 1958, in Frederick. For 13 years they made their home in Kansas City, Mo., and in 1971 returned to Carter County. The proud mother of nine, her children know her as the, "virtuous woman. They rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her." Seeking adjectives to describe their mother, additionally her children say, "She is unique, caring, a diamond, our backbone, our mama, the wind beneath our wings," adding that "harmony, peace and love describe her."
"A woman who looketh well to the ways of her household, she eateth not the bread of idleness." Thirteen years she was employed at Stromberg-Carlson, 11 years for the Pettits family, 11 years for the Cunningham family, and seven years for the Rision family before she retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant; two sons, Samuel Duane Godwin in 1994, and Jeffrey Godwin in 2002.
Doll Baby leaves to forever cherish precious memories: her husband, of the home; five sons and daughters-in-law, Horace Pickens, Denver, Ronald and Deborah Godwin, Ardmore, Delcant and Cynthia Godwin, Lone Grove, Willie Van Godwin, Lone Grove, and Edgar Godwin, Pauls Valley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Lawrence McGee, Ardmore, Jacqueline and Maurice Flicklins, Albany, Ga.; four brothers, Samuel Pickens and Arvell Pickens, both Ardmore, Weldon Pickens and Mark Pickens, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Bonnie Helen Colbert, Oklahoma City, Arzelia Shannon, Ardmore, and Irene Stephenson, Arlington, Texas; her mother-in-law, Essie Lawson, Ardmore; 25 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
