Birth: Nov. 21, 1925
Center
Saguache County
Colorado, USA
Death: Feb. 19, 2008, USA

Cleotilde L. Velarde, age 82, a life-long resident of Cuba, NM, joined our Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Cleotile was born to the late Alberto and Estefanita Gurule Herrera in Center, CO.
Cleo was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba where she was active in many church activities, including the Nacimiento Woman's Club, which was dear to her heart. Cleo was a well known area artist who excelled in oils, pastels, chalk and copper etching and was the art teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Cuba for many years.
Cleo was a pioneer business woman for 50 years, owning and operatin the long standing Richards Department Store in Cuba. Cleo never met a stranger in her many years as a business woman and she was known to use her position to generously help people in need. Cleo and her husband, Richard, loved to travel and they never missed an opportunity to travel through the Americas and beyond.
Cleo was self taught in all of her many interests. Cleo studied and read about the culinary arts, architecture, museums, opera, all facets of art, fashion design, just to name a few. Her elegant style and many of her outfits that she put together were always prepared in advance. It's hard to imagine that from Cleo's humble upbringing, emerged a woman of such stature, knowledge and understanding of all the wonderful things that the Lord put before her.
Cleo's family was her pride and joy, and they all loved when she would use her culinary expertise to cook for them on a daily basis or on special occasions. Cleo loved having her family together and nothing brought her more joy.
Cleo was preceded in death by her father, Alberto Herrera, mother, Estefaita Gurule Herrera, sister, Rosarito Sauter, three sisters-in-law, Josefita, Marmolita and Mabel Herrera, two brothers-in-law, William "Bill" Sauter and Tommy Robinson, Comadre and friend, Erminda Casaus Valdez and dear compadres, Solomon Garcia and Annie Romero Garcia.
On behalf of our family, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support give to us during our time of mourning at the passing of beloved Cleo. Thank each of you for your kindness.
