Husband of Avarilla Eyler Chamberlain. Served with Company B, 21st Pennsylvania Calvary.
The son of Jane Chamberlain, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 11" tall.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Gettysburg June 26, 1863, as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864. He is on the company register as "J. Chamberlin Clayton."
He married Avarilla Eyler and fathered Joseph Grant (b. 03/24/69), Mary (b. 09/??/70), William C. (b. @1872), John Elmer (b. 12/15/76 - "a cripple"), Harrison Garfield (b. 05/17/81), Charles Beaver (b. 11/29/86), Grace (b. ?), and Harry (b. ?). He was a member of Skelly Post No. 9, G.A.R., and in 1890, lived in Fairfield, Adams County.
