Lloyd L. Boxley Sr. FREDERICKSBURG
Lloyd Lee Boxley Sr. was lifted by the Master’s whisper, "Well done thou good and faithful servant," on July 16, 2005, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. Our adoring husband, caring father, compassionate grandfather and kind-hearted friend was born July 22, 1919, in Balty, Va., to the late Otis and Olive Carter Boxley. He was the second of five children. Educated in the Caroline County school system, he attended Virginia State College for Negroes in 1939, majoring in the one subject that he had a true love for, agriculture. While attending Virginia State, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II as a supply NCO and attained the final rank of technical sergeant. In December of 1945, he returned to Virginia State to finish his schooling. He received a B.S. degree in agriculture in May of 1947, and went on to receive further graduate training in agriculture from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. In July of 1947, Lloyd began a profession that truly exemplified his dedication to service and helping others, he became a teacher of agriculture. He began teaching in the one county that held his heart and that to him, was above all others, Caroline County. He taught at Union, Bowling Green and Caroline High Schools as he passionately strived to make a difference in generations of student’s lives as a role model and friend. He also taught night classes to veterans of World War II and worked with the New Farmers of America, the Future Farmers of America and Adult Education Classes before he retired in 1984, after 37 loyal years of service at the age of 65. He managed the Caroline Community Cannery for many years and continued this service during his retirement. While teaching at Union High School in Bowling Green, Va., Lloyd met his best friend and the love of his life, Pauline E. Shelton of Buckingham, Va., and the two were wed on Dec. 29, 1949. The love, respect and fervor for the life that Lloyd and Pauline had created together was shared with a daughter, Janet Diane and a son, Lloyd Lee Jr. Lloyd was baptized and accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. As an active member of St. John Baptist Church, his enduring presence, service and means will be remembered well after his death. Brother Boxley loved his church and he worked hard within it. He served on the Deacon Board, was church clerk for more than 40 years and served as the chairperson for the cemetery, Men’s Day, Budget and Building Fund Committees. He cherished these offices that he held within the church. An influential leader and activist, Lloyd served on a wide array of political and civic organizations for which he received numerous awards and recognitions. Some of them included chairman, Caroline Planning Commission; chairman, Caroline Board of Zoning Appeals; chairman, Caroline County School Board; member of the National and Caroline Chapters of the Virginia State University Alumni; member of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society; member of the Board of Trustees of the Prince Hall Masons, Welcome Lodge No. 125; member of the Rappahannock Area Development Commission (RADCO); member of the Rappahannock Area Agency on Aging; and COC advisor to the USDA Farm Service Agency.
