OBITUARY -- Danville Register & Bee, December 15, 2002
DANVILLE, Va. - Norman Oakes "Duke" Gammon, 90, of 2552 Vandola Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Danville Regional Medical Center, after five years of declining health and three days in the hospital. Born July 6, 1912, in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of William Joseph Gammon and Ida Scearce Gammon.
He lived his entire life in the Vandola community. He worked in the maintenance department of Dan River Mills and retired on disability after 40 years of service. He later worked part time at Coachman Cleaners.
He was a charter member and founder of Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a deacon, a Sunday School teacher and on the board of directors, and he had a perfect Sunday School attendance record for 55 years. He was the last surviving member of his generation.
He was married to Annie Mildred Moss Gammon. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons, Clifton Gammon and his wife Sandra, John Gammon and his wife, Brenda, Andrew Gammon and Danny Gammon and his wife,Edith, all of Danville; four daughters, Lois G. Sherill and her husband Jerry, Joyce Holt and her husband Johnny, Mary Nell Hanks and her husband Larry and Vickie G. Cassell, all of Danville; two daughters-in-law, Lavonne Gammon and Shelby Gammon; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four sons, Frank, Carl, Phillip and Samuel Gammon; two daughters, Kaye and Faye Gammon; three brothers, Seward "Buck" Gammon, Joseph "Pete" Gammon and Oscar "Bud" Gammon; and three sisters, Mabel G. Moss, Emma G. Moss and Flossie Gammon.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Cecil Coates, the Rev. Matthew Pacifico and the Rev. Bennett Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Gammon Family Cemetery. The family received friends 7-8:30 Monday at Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church and at other times will be at 173 Bennett St., off Vandola Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, Va. 24541, or to the Westover Hills Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund. Swicegood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
