She was born in Millboro, Virginia on April 2, 1905; she was educated at Millboro High School, Flora McDonald College (formerly in Fayetteville, NC) and Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University).
She taught elementary school in Millboro until 1929 when she married John P. Ackerly, Jr. of Lexington, Virginia, where she moved.
She served as the Lexington High School girls' basketball coach in 1931-1933 and was a member of the Lexington Presbyterian Church. She moved to Richmond in 1949 following her husband's appointment as branch manager of the Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. Following her husband's death in 1954, she taught the second grade at St. Christopher's Lower School until 1970, when she retired there at age 65 to become a school teacher at The Gill School in Chesterfield County.
She became principal of The Gill School Lower School in 1972 and served in that capacity until 1977, when she retired a second time.
She was a member of The Country Club of Virginia, First Presbyterian Church, and was a former member of the Woman's Club.
She is survived by her two sons: John P. Ackerly III and Benjamin C. Ackerly, both of Richmond; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Lewis Clarkson Crafton of Hagerstown, MD; and three brothers: Blandy W. Clarkson of Lexington, James L. Clarkson of Millboro, and Ralph R. Clarkson of Dayton, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19 and a graveside service will be held at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 19. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher's School or the First Presbyterian Church.
