NEWPORT NEWS - Marcia Lynn (Worthington) Adkins passed away March 12, 2007, after four years of courageous battle with colon cancer.
Marcia taught at Epes Elementary School for 16 years until her retirement in June 2005. She had a passion for teaching and loved children. Marcia was recognized in 1999 as the 'Newport News Outstanding Teacher of the Year'.
After her retirement, Marcia was instrumental in organizing a mentoring program at Stephens Memorial Baptist Church. This program was eventually named 'The Marcia Adkins Mentoring Program'. Even though she was not well, she participated in the last mentoring day for this school year on March 6. Marcia accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at a young age and was active in her hometown Methodist Church.
After marriage to Danny, they spent time in different states and countries while Danny was in the Army. Their last assignment was in Newport News and they settled there with their daughter, Julie. They began attending First Baptist Church, Newport News. Danny and Julie eventually joined the church, however, Marcia was not ready to give up her Methodist heritage. The entire family was involved in the music program (choir, handbells, and instrumental ensemble). It wasn't until the later part of 2006 that Marcia decided to give her husband Danny a special Christmas present. She went forward on Dec. 24, 2006 and joined First Baptist Church and then was baptized on Feb. 4, 2007.
Marcia was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Finley Worthington.
A celebration of Marcia's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2007, at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., and will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Randel Everett. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 12893 Jefferson Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to: First Baptist Church/Designated for the Relay of Life Team or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the care of Altmeyer Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 12893 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23608.
