Robert Burns Allan
It will be remembered that a week or two ago we noticed the death of Mr. Robert B. Allan of Normanby, but since then we have learned a few particulars in regard to the deceased which we think are worth publishing. He was born at Craig Parish, near Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, on the 27th of June, 1796. Mr. Allan's father was a neighbor and friend of Robert Burns, the Scottish Bard. The latter visited the parents of the deceased a few weeks after his birth and the little fellow was placed on the poet's knee and nursed him for a short time and he presented the baby with a small present. The poet died only a few months afterwards. The boy was named by his parents Robert Burns, after the poet, thus the deceased formed a rather unique link between the past and the present. He was a stirling Reformer, and as we mentioned resided a number of years in Fergus. He settled in Normanby about twenty years ago, residing with his son-in-law, Mr. Hamilton Sterrat {Stirrett} for a number of years, but lately with another son-in-law Mr. John Morrice {Morice}, at whose residence he died on the 26th November last, being over 86 years of age. He walked all the way from Normanby to Fergus to vote for the late Dr. Parker when he ran the first time for North Wellington. He had thirteen children, sons and daughters, and they and their descendants are scattered over nearly every quarter of the globe. One son resides in Australia and is a prosperous condition. Another son resides in the United States, another in England, and one in Scotland. Six of his grandchildren acted as pall-bearers at the funeral.
