ALBERT BYRE BAKER, loving husband and father, longtime community service leader, and 42-year employee of Dow Chemical Co., died at his home in Jones Creek, Texas, on Jan. 7, 2011. He was 83. Byre was born on July 1, 1927, in Clifton Heights, Pa., to Albert and Elizabeth Baker. After graduating from Marshall High School in Marshall, Texas, he attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, receiving a chemical engineering degree and a master's in chemical engineering from Texas A&M. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He began work at Dow Chemical Co. in 1950, where he would continue to work until his retirement in December of 1992. He held several patents for his work during his career, including his research on the treatment of saline water in the early 1960s. His work took him to Japan and Spain, where as a project engineer he helped Dow establish polyethylene plants, as well as assisting in plant development in South Korea, Colombia and Chile.

While at Dow, he led the Dow Carolers for many years, a group that spread Christmas cheer throughout Brazosport area nursing homes. It was one of many ways he shared his love of music with the community. He also played the trombone in a Dixieland combo and the Dow band and, for several decades, led choirs at First United Methodist Church of Freeport, Texas, and St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Jones Creek. He also spent countless hours as a community volunteer, including coaching his daughters' softball team, leading his son's Cub Scout troop and helping elementary school children learn to read.

Byre is survived by his wife of 48 years, Winona White Baker; brothers William Wilson Baker and wife Jill of Greenville, Texas, and Robert Marshall Baker and wife Diana of Texas City, Texas; daughter Deborah Lynn Gann and husband Michael of Rockport, Texas; daughter Cheryl Ann Baker of Jones Creek; daughter Pamela Kay Horton and husband James of New Orleans; son Michael Byre Baker of New York City; four grandchildren: John Anthony Perez, Jr., Alyssa Kaye Worman, Samantha Nikole Perez and Evan Zachary Horton; great-granddaughter Audrey Vanessa Perez and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Betty Jane Furlong of Fort Myers, Fla.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Lakewood Chapel in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, followed by burial at Gulf Prairie Cemetery in Jones Creek.

Pallbearers for the service will be Byre's grandson John Anthony Perez, Jr.; sons-in-law Michael Gann and James Horton; nephews Mark Baker and Michael Baker; friends of the family Ralph David and Gary Sizemore and Greg Upton.

The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Freeport
