Rites for Martin Barsness held last Friday. Funeral services for Martin J. Barsness, a lifetime resident of the Glenwood area, were held Friday, April 3, at the Barsness Lutheran church, with Rev. Carl Listug officiating. Interment took place in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dale, Greg, Grant and Lanny Barsness, Dr. R.V. Gandrud and William Mesica. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Harry Simmonds, Clarence Barsness, Gilman Braaten, Herman Dalager, George Hanson, Roy Moe and Ernest Nitardy.
Mr. Barsness died at Eitel hospital, Minneapolis, Sunday, March 29, following a two-month illness.
He was born June 21, 1889, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nels Barsness. He grew up in Barsness Township and later went to Medicine Hat, Canada. He was united in marriage to Hilda Braaten June 21, 1916.
He homesteaded in Richmond, Sask., Canada, before returning to Minnesota in 1918. He farmed in this area until his retirement several years ago. He resided at the Glenwood Retirement home until his death following complications from surgery. Mr. Barsness was a member of Barsness Lutheran church, where he served in various offices. He was also very active in community affairs.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R.V. (Grace) Gandrud, Albert Lea, and Mrs. William (Nelly Jane) Masica, Heron Lake; three sons, Norris and Raymond of Glenwood, and Marvel of Minnetonka; a brother, Ole, Glenwood; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hilda; a daughter, Mavis; five sisters and two brothers.
Friends and relatives attended the funeral from out of town came from Hillsboro, N.D.; Minneapolis, Sedan, Brooten, St. Cloud, Duluth, White Bear Lake, Benson, Sunburg, Villard, Terrance, Alexandria, Starbuck, Minnetonka, Albert Lea and Heron Lake."
