Joseph was the third son of John and Dorcas Burley. He was born March 22, 1766 in Clinton Town, Dutchess County, New York. His name appears in the Dutchess County census book of 1790. His name was spelled Burleigh, and at the time had him listed as having a wife and two sons. He was married to Jemima Brown, born February 12, 1764. It's not known when they were married, but they had six children in all. The family moved to Canada in 1797, settling in Wilton, Ernestown Township, Addington County, which is about 14 miles NE of Bath, Ontario. He received his land grant of 200 acres August 8, 1798. It was here that his wife, Jemima apparently died.

Joseph, a widower of about 11 years, married again in 1822 to Sarah Ann Hurd, widow of Joseph Hurley. To this union were born 4 children. When their last child was born in 1833, Joseph was 67 and Sarah was 42 years of age. Along with the offspring of previous marriages, they had a total of 18 children.

A copy of a petition for land was obtained from the public archives in Ottawa, filed by Joseph's nephew Abner. One of the affidavits filed with the petition was signed by Joseph. It's interesting that he was able to sign his name, as this was not a common accomplishment in those days!

Joseph Burley bought Lot 36, Consession 6 of Ernestown Township in 1805 and lived there until his death, April 11,1847 and is buried at Wilton. Sarah passed away October 18, 1871. Both lived 81 years.
