Jerry Casey , 93, of Shawnee died Thursday, June 10, at his home.

He was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Claremore to William and Flora Casey .

He attended Claremore High School and Oklahoma Military Academy in Claremore.

He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University) in 1933, with a bachelor's degree in animal science.

He married Mary A. Yerby of Poteau in 1936. They had recently celebrated their 67th anniversary.

He was a Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), a professional insurance designation. He spent 13 years as an executive with various insurance companies and 30 years as owner of Jerry Casey Insurance Agency, an Independent Property and Casualty Agency.

During World War II, he was a claims superintendent with the USF&G Insurance Company that assumed the risk for the pilot training stations in the United States and the 4th Ferrying Command Headquarters.

Casey was president of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Oklahoma in 1973, and an instructor and director of the Annual Insurance School at the University of Oklahoma.

He was a delegate to the British Chartered Insurance Institute in 1961. Casey received the Oscar award from the Iota Nu Sigma insurance fraternity in 1967. He also spent 58 years as a sheep and cattle rancher and 53 years as a real estate investor and rental property owner.

Casey was president of the Shawnee Rotary Club in 1956.

He was active with the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce, including chairmanships of the agriculture committee and fire and safety committee. He was a member of the ambassadors committee. He received the Gordon Richards Sr. Service Award in 1997, the highest honor given by the Chamber. Casey was director of the Pottawatomie County Industrial Exposition Air Show for seven years.

He was a member of the vestry at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Casey served as president of the Oklahoma Tuberculosis Association for two terms.

He was a Scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in Shawnee and at National and World Jamborees, a wood badge training instructor, district chairman and served as a Last Frontier Council executive board member for more than 30 years. He received the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in 1958.

Casey was a charter member and later commander of the Oklahoma City Squadron of the U.S. Power Squadrons.

He was president of the Oklahoma Alfalfa Hay and Seed Association in 1985.

Casey served as vice president of the Heart of Oklahoma Angus Association.

He was capital fund drive chairman for Oklahoma Baptist University.

Casey was an instructor in family finance seminars for 10 years at the University of Oklahoma.

He was activities chairman for the International Caravanning Club.

Casey was awarded the first Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award from the Shawnee Kiwanis Club in 1950.

He received the Oklahoma Lung Association Carl Pucket Award for continued service.

Casey was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Oklahoma Military Academy in 1999.

He was awarded the Oklahoma Conservation Award from the Soil Conservation Service in 1983.

Casey received the Top Business Consultant Award from the Employee Needs and Wants Recognition Index.

Casey traveled in North, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa, Japan and China.

He took an expedition with his son Bill Casey and grandson Roger Casey to live with the Cofan Indians in the jungles of the upper Amazon River in Ecuador.

Casey made a 6,000-mile personal houseboat expedition covering the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Coast, Hudson River, Great Lakes, and the Ohio, Cumberland, Mississippi and Arkansas rivers.

He took an Air Stream motor home trip to Alaska when he was 89.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Casey , of the home; daughter, Mary Ealey and husband Don of Shawnee; son, Bill Casey and wife Monica of Edmond; five grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Arthur P. Scrutchins officiating. His cremains will be interred in the columbarium at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
