Pastor W. M. Matthews united Ida Belle and Albert Griffin (who preceded her in death) in holy matrimony on April 18, 1937. To this union three children were born, Albert Demarcus, Hazel Yvonne, and Oscar Stannard Griffin. Albert Demarcus and Hazel Yvonne preceded her in death.
For eighty-one years, mother Griffin affectionately showed her love for her church through serving on various committees and advocating her devotion to Shiloh M. B. Church. Over the last two decades, she faithfully served on the Mother's Board.
She was an educator, earning her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi Vocational College in Itta Bena, MS. Mrs. Griffin did further study at Jackson State College, MVSU, Delta State University, and the University of Mississippi. Because of her love for children with special needs, she later earned a BS Degree in Special Education.
Ida Belle taught third grade at McNair Elem. School for more than two decades and continued her thirty years in the classroom at Humphreys County Elementary School. She served as an assistant supervisor in the Special Services Department, retiring from the Humphreys County School District in 1978.
Ida Belle may be remembered as "a torch of knowledge". She could recall the significant events, but she could explain in detail the insignificant events as well. She never gave up and through various community activities and church events, she continued to shower advice to the youth of the community. She could often be heard saying, "Stay in School, believe in yourself and God, and strive to make a decent and honest living."
Saturday morning, November 20, 2004, Mother Griffin was called home to receive her crown of glory.
Mother Griffin leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Oscar Griffin, a special daughter-in-law, Lula, one sister, Cora G. Woods, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, God-daughter, Flossie Boyd, and sister-in-law Grace Griffin, Rosie Lee, and Josephine Merriweather. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends who will also honor and cherish her memories forever.
