On Thursday, September 15, 2011, Roger W. "Ike" Weaver, of Gettysburg, passed from this life to the next.
Born on March 7, 1925, in Irishtown, Ike was the son of the late William and Mae (Lawrence) Weaver. He was also the grandson of the late Kit (Brady) Lawrence, with whom he spent much time after his mother's sudden death.
As a young man, Ike was a talented athlete, excelling at football, wrestling, and baseball; he played for Central Catholic and for several local leagues. He also enjoyed watching and participating in dirt-track racing. Ike raced his own #14 and #71 cars in the late model division at local tracks. His love of racing spilled over into NASCAR, and he could be heard cheering on his favorite drivers at every opportunity.
Ike enjoyed telling stories about his childhood, especially the one about the time he and his cousin, Earl, ran away from home to find work on the CA boat docks. When the boys had gotten about half way into their journey, they met Father Flanagan and were convinced to spend a few days at his Boys Town. During that time, he gently encouraged them to go home.
Ike was a skilled welder and was employed in that capacity by several local companies, including the former Bethlehem Steel. He was also a WWII veteran.
Ike leaves sons, Robert (Debbie) and Brian K. (Rhonda); daughters, Barbara (Millard Day), Deborah, and Brenda (Rick); 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Masemer. He was the stepfather of Barry and Larry Myers. His former wife, Mary (Hippensteel) Weaver, also survives him.
Ike was preceded in death by daughters, June Weaver and Lois Anne Meckley; grandchildren, Peter, Maria, and Michael Weaver, and Kenneth Meckley; and sisters, Dorothy Null and Betty Stahl.
A private memorial will be held for his family. Friends and relatives are invited to a celebration of his life, which will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Irishtown Fire Hall. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart, Conewago.
