Mrs. Avis Henigan died peacefully on Sept. 14, 2003, at St. John's Regional Health Center after several months of ill health. She was seventy six. Born Avis Ann Jedlicka, near Hanover, Kan., July 20, 1927, she was the daughter of Frank and Sophia (Bruna) Jedlicka, both deceased, as is her only sister, Ludmilla Schwartz. After attending parochial and public schools in Hanover, she studied voice and violin at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, under violinist-conductor Immanuel Wishnow, earning a Bachelor of Fine and Performing Arts degree "With Distinction." She also studied violin for a year under violinist-composer Cecil Burleigh at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She married Robert H. Henigan at St. Mary's Cathedral in Lincoln, Neb., June 7, 1950, and taught music in Nebraska public schools before moving to Columbia, Mo., in 1952. The Henigan family moved to Springfield, Mo., in June of 1961, and for many years, Avis played violin in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and for various local opera productions. She was a member of the Springfield Regional Opera Guild and was an SRO patron. Avis was a member of the St. Agnes Cathedral parish for forty years. She belonged to the Altar Society and was an active and dedicated member of the Associates of St. Francis de Sales for several decades.
Mrs. Henigan is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Dr. Robert H. Henigan of Springfield; her son, Dr. Mark Henigan of Modesto, Calif.; and her daughter, Julie, also of Springfield. Avis was a sensitive, artistic, thoughtful and loving person, with a profound sense of spirituality. All who knew her cherished her friendship and love.
Her funeral will be conducted at St. Agnes Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, with Msgr. John Westhues celebrant. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
