Gottlieb was born in Esslingen, Germany. He arrived in the U.S. on Sept. 5th, 1883, aboard the Gellert, and evidently spent 2 years somewhere in Iowa before coming to Sonoma County.
He arrived in 1885, and settled in the beautiful Bennett Valley where he grew grapes and made wine. This was about 3 miles NE of Santa Rosa. The address of the ranch was originaly, route 3 box 464. Then it was 4293 Bennett Valley Road. The house is still there, but it is all developed around it, and the address is 2769 Canterbury Drive. You can still see how the driveway originally came off Bennett Valley Road. Of course now it is within the city limits.
In 1899 he wrote home to Germany that he was all settled and ready for a wife. That is the story.
Along came Anna Spieth from Esslingen as well, and they were married 22 Oct. 1899, at the Lutheran church in Santa Rosa.
They had two daughters, Marie Wilhelmina, and Anna Karoline.
