Life Of John E. Batdorff Is
Crushed Out By Fall Of Debris

Wiconisco, Pa., Feb. 10. --- While William Conley, the victim of Monday's fatal accident at the colliery, was being buried, John E. Batdorff, another miner, was instantly killed by what is believed to have been the explosion of an undischarged shot, which miss fired at a previous discharge.

Batdorff and his two laborers, Charles Schlottman and Richard Sharp, were engaged driving the Rock plane gangway in Short Mountain Slope, Thursday when a loud report was heard throughout all the adjoining workings. Upon investigation it was discovered the report was caused by a shot which blew out the timber and rock and crushed the life out of Batdorff and painfully injured injured Schlottman about the back and other parts of the body. Sharp was hit on the foot but was able to walk home.

Another opinion as to the cause of the accident is that it was the result of a crack in the roof, causing the debris and timber to fall.

Batdorff was about 31 years of age and leaves a widow and four children. The funeral will be held Sunday.
