Thomas Franklin Ashby
Tom Ashby, 84, of Tuscawilla Hills, Charles Town, died March 5, 2015, under the care of Hospice Community Care and Greenfield of Williamsburg, Virginia.
He was born June 26, 1930, in Keyser, West Virginia to the late George Thomas and Ethel Pearl (Steedman) Ashby. He graduated from Keyser High School in 1948. After a 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force he and his wife, Fay, became residents of Hampton, Virginia. During his second career, he was a designer for Newport News Shipbuilding and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He loved being on the water and became an avid sailor in Biloxi, Mississippi and in Hampton. He also enjoyed discovering the local history of each place he lived. After retirement, Tom and Fay, returned to West Virginia and settled in Charles Town.
He embraced small town life by being an active member of the Charles Town community. He was a member of the Charles Town Presbyterian Church serving as church deacon, and as member of the Property Committee. He had previously been a member of the Lions Club of Charles Town. He enjoyed being on the Senior Bowling League of Charles Town and volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Jefferson County. He also belonged to the Magnolia Masonic Lodge of Biloxi, Mississippi.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Ashby Spain and husband Ed of Williamsburg, Virginia and Karen Ashby-Bowers and husband Larry of Middleway, West Virginia; four grandchildren Bryce Bowman and wife Lindsay, Zachary Bowman and wife Summer, Liam Bowers and wife Paige, and Anna-Claire Bowers; one sister, Edna Louise Crumbaugh and husband Robert of Hamstead, Maryland; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Doris Fay Ashby; sisters, Maude Mae Grimes and Sarah Jane Fout.
A memorial service is to be held at the Charles Town Presbyterian Church, Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. John Bethard officiating. Internment will be at a later date in Dulling Cemetery in Keyser, West Virginia.
