An open memorial service will be held for Charles (Chuck) Durrett Sr. at noon on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 1720 42nd Street, Sacramento. He died Feb. 5 of kidney failure. He was 72.
Mr. Durrett was born May 6, 1934, in Butler, Mo., to Carl and Dorothy Durrett.
Mr. Durrett worked as a carpenter, logger and miner in Yuba and Sierra counties. Later he became an international construction superintendent of significant large-scale building projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Bolivia, Vietnam, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Egypt and Cuba. His career included serving as general superintendent for the building of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Sacramento.
He loved travel and language. He was self-taught in Spanish, French and Portuguese. He was always known as an extraordinarily affable and social man who could and would befriend the restaurant wait staff, the owner, the fellow swimmer, the teacher, the salesman, the grocery clerk and the man on the street. Growing up in the Depression, he had an extremely healthy respect for work, a strong work ethic, and for others who embraced work as a means to contribute to society. His bountiful and sharp sense of humor will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his four children, Charles Durrett, Jr. of Nevada City, Diane Durrett of Eugene, Ore., Carl Durrett of Sacramento and Rachael Durrett of London, England; four grandchildren Tony, Jessie, Kyle and Ryan; former wife, Rosemary, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Durrett.
Mr. Durrett's ashes will be interned during a memorial service at the cemetery in Goodyear's Bar in March. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to a trade school of your choice
