Robert L. "Deacon" Barr, 81, of East Third Street, Watsontown was called to heaven Saturday evening, February 26, 2011. He passed away at Kramm Health and Rehabilitation Center, Watsontown where he resided since November 16, 2010.
Born September 18, 1929 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Oliver and Alma (Metzger) Barr. On April 9, 1948 he married the former Ruth A. Burrows and they would have celebrated 63 years of marriage later this spring.
Deacon had worked at Hefty's Flour Mill, Callenberger Construction, Bowman J. Ulrich Contractor, Watsontown Brick Yard, and had owned and operated Barr's Paint and Hardware Store in Watsontown. He later retired after 20 years as the superintendent of Watsontown Borough.
He was a life member of the Warrior Run (formerly West Branch) Fire Company, a member of the Watsontown Lions Club, Watsontown Auxiliary Police, the Watsontown Recreation "Dogtown" Camp, and the Watsontown United Methodist Church.
He was the recipient of a Citation of Appreciation from Watsontown Borough Council, received the "Outstanding Citizen Award" Citation from the PA House of Representatives in 1981, and also received a citation of appreciation from the Watsontown American Legion Post 323.
He was and avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law: Sally L. (Barr) Mazol and her husband Jim, Turbotville; Sandra M. (Barr) Temple and her husband Jim, Limestoneville; three grandchildren: Tanya L. Mazol and companion Paul Beaver; Sam Temple and wife Heather; Crystal (Temple) Doresky and husband John; four great-grandchildren: Toby Daniel Mazol Souder, Evan James-Nittany Doresky, Logan Robert Temple and Gracie Mae Doresky.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacey Ann Mazol in December 1992 and a sister, Lois (Barr) Pfleegor in November 2010.
At the request of the family, there will be no viewing.
Friends are invited to a graveside service Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Watsontown Cemetery where the Rev. Doug Eberly, his pastor will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Warrior Run Area Fire Dept., PO Box 8, Watsontown PA 17777.
The family is being assisted with their arrangements by Brooks Funeral Home, 124 Main Street, Watsontown.
