Rev. John Clark Harrison | Visit Guest Book

"How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!" Isaiah 52:7. A pastor and longtime resident of Port Allen, he peacefully went home to be with His Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at 8:05 p.m. at the home of his daughter, where he had been residing. He was 91, born Jan. 20, 1919. He was retired from Capital City Press and the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board. Visiting at Hall Davis & Son Funeral Home, Port Allen, on Thursday, Aug. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visiting at St. Peter Baptist Church, Erwinville, on Friday, Aug. 13, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Viewing at Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Allen, on Friday from 5 p.m. until funeral service at 7 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Oliver Washington. Dismissal at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Baptist Church. Interment in church cemetery. He always had a servant's heart. He served his country with the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army. He joined the West Baton Rouge Parish Voters League and was one of the first African-Americans to register to vote. He was the president of the PTA of Cohn Elementary School for a number of years and served as secretary of the Prince Hall Grand Masons, Stone Square Lodge 8, for many years. He was a former officer of the West Baton Rouge Parish Council on Aging; past secretary-treasurer for the West Baton Rouge Ministers Conference of which he had been a member until his death; and a member of the 4th District Baptist Association, Louisiana State Convention and National Baptist Convention USA Inc. Survived by his six children, Linda Harrison, Robert Harrison and wife Mary, Donald Harrison and wife Wanda, Marvin Harrison, Lisbon H. Brown, and Kathy H. Booker and husband Harold Sr.; 16 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three godchildren; special cousin, Marilyn B. Craig; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Also survived by his wife, Irene Harrison, her two children and their spouses, and her brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and grandchildren. Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Hattie Mae Nickles Harrison; parents, John Clark Harrison Sr. and Lorenza Roussel Harrison; brother, Robert Edward Harrison; three sisters, Mary Florence H. Washington, Virginia Harrison and Ella Mae Harrison; eight sisters-in-law and eight brothers-in-law.
