Caryl P. Baldwin, 91, a resident of Gray for 40 years, died March 24, 2006. He was born January 20, 1915, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the son of Horace Bertrand Baldwin and Lousie Fitz Baldwin.
The family moved to Bangor, when Caryl was age 5, and he graduated from Bangor High School in 1933 and from Port Arthur College, Port Arthur, Texas, in 1936. At the age of 15 he earned his Ham Radio Operators License and was known to many as W1EFF.
Caryl served as radio operator on cargo ships along the East Coast for 2 years and later worked at Harvard College in the experimental lab during WWII.
He met and married Evelyn Brooks Rowe on June 29, 1940. They had one daughter, Brenda Joyce Baldwin Hill. They bought a home in East Gray in 1943 and lived there for over 40 years.
Then in 1983 they built a new home in North Yarmouth and lived there 20 years. They were married 65 years.
Caryl enjoyed his home and was always improving it, doing the labor himself. He worked for Herrick Co. for next 20 years, and he was a manufacturer's representative for the Celotex Corporation.
He traveled Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont selling building products. Mr. Baldwin was a 60-year member of The Presumpscot Masonic Lodge No. 127.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Evelyn; daughter Brenda Hill; nephews Richard B. Baldwin Jr. and David Baldwin; two step-grandchildren, David Hill and Andrew Hill.
