José Acosta y Vargas was a soldado in the 1ra compañia de los voluntarios de Cataluña. He was the son of José Rafael Acosta and María Tomasa Vargas. José died at the Presidio of Monterey and was buried in the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) cemetery on November 16, 1796 (SC Death 01155).
