Phillip Thomas Barbaree went to be with his Heavenly Father Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007.
He was born March 4, 1947, to Sadie C. (Williams) and Elmo L. Barbaree in Smackover, Ark. The family moved to Guymon, OK when Phil was 13. He graduated from Guymon High School in 1965, and married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Hicks in August, 1965. Phil was honored in Strathmore's "Who's Who" in 1996/97 edition Registry of Business Leaders inclusive to individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their occupation.
He graduated from Panhandle State College in 1973 while working for City National Bank in Guymon. Shortly after graduation he went to work at Academy Boulevard Bank in Colorado Springs, Colorado, until 1976 when he moved to Vinita, Okla., to work for Oklahoma State Bank. During that time he earned his masters in banking from Southern Methodist University.
His first banking position was with the City National Bank in Guymon and he retired from Oklahoma State Bank in Vinita after 22 years of dedicted service in March of 1998 as the Executive Vice President, due to health reasons. He continued to serve on the bank board until 2006, when the couple moved to the Tryon community.
Phil was a member of the Tryon Baptist Church; a former member of the Vinita First Baptist Church serving as a director for the young adults and finace committee, and the Chelsea First Baptist Church where he had been active in teaching Sunday school and served on the finance committee. He was a former past-president of the Vinita Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Vinita Country Club Board, past president of the Vinita Kiwanas; president and board member for many years of Bank Employers Special Trust. He was a 32 Degree Master Mason.
He had a long history of heart problems, starting in 1989 with the widow-maker heart attack, surviving because of God's power, then a heart transplant in April 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Gwen of the home; one son, Shawn Barbaree of Guymon, and one daughter, Tracie Mansfield of Tryon, Okla.; one brother, Calvin Barbaree and his wife, Sherry, of OKC; two granddaughter, three grandsons and one great-granddaughter; mother-in-law, Joye Hicks and father-in-law, Calvin Hicks of Guymon; brothers-in-law, Dennis Hicks and his wife, Pam, and Noel Hicks and his wife, Jean, all of Guymon; sister-in-law, Rita Wise, and her husband, Richard, of Guymon; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Cushing, Okla., with Brother Gerald Giswell of Chelsea, Okla., and Brother Bob Fowler of Tryon, Okla., officiating.
Burial wil follow in the Tryon Cemetery.
The family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Floyd Family Center, east of the Funeral Home. Services under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home. [Edit Bio]
