Eugene Chitwood age 79 of Knoxville, TN formerly of Winfield passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the North Knoxville Medical Center.

Eugene Chitwood age 79 of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the North Knoxville Medical Center. Born in Scott County on October 29, 1933, he was the son of the late Reuben and Elsie Thompson Chitwood.

Eugene was a member of the Temple Baptist Church for 27 years and the Solway Baptist Church for 20 years. Eugene served as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, bus ministry, was active in church visitations, and donated many hours of his free time to church maintenance. He began work at TVA in 1959 in the Electrical Engineering Branch in the Division Engineering and Construction in Knoxville. His first assignment was with the Procurement Group that was responsible for specifying, purchasing, and contract management relating to the securing of electrical equipment for all of TVA's generating facilities. He became a Senior Engineer, Principle Engineer, and the Group Head. In the latter position his Group was responsible for the specifying procurement of all switchyard, plant-switchgear, and control boards for Nuclear, Hydro, and Fossil Fuel generating stations. He also served as the temporary Electrical Engineering Branch Chief. Eugene's Technical expertise was known throughout the power generating community. He served on technical committees with the engineering community and was instrumental in developing electrical equipment standards for the newer and larger nuclear power generating plants. Throughout his career he was admired and respected by all of his associates and, in particular, those who served directly under his supervision. He also provided consulting work for FEMA for 15 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jack Chitwood; mother and father-in-law Zettie and Frank Sexton. Survived by his wife Joyce Sexton Chitwood of Powell, Tennessee; three children: Gregory Eugene Chitwood and wife Robin of Clinton, Tennessee, James Steven Chitwood and wife Debbie of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Melissa Joyce Chitwood Young and husband Patrick of Powell, Tennessee; brother Gary Chitwood and wife Brenda of Winfield, Tennessee; sister Betty Stanley of Fort Wayne, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Matthew Eugene Chitwood and wife Crystal of Powell, Amanda Renee Smith and husband Roy of Powell, Tennessee, Andrew Benjamin Chitwood and wife Dominique of Clinton, Tennessee, James Stephen Chitwood of Knoxville, Tennessee, Candice Marie Chitwood, very special granddaughter Chloe Alexa Young, Willow Noel Young,and Piper Arielle Young all of Powell, Tennessee; several great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the Chitwood family on Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. until time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Bro. David Rosser officiating. Graveside service will be conducted on Friday, January 18 at 11 a.m. in the Sexton Memorial Cemetery.
