Gertrude "Gertie" Mauluweena Ah'Nee, 73, of Anchorage passed away on May 30, 2012 surrounded by loved ones. Gertie was born on June 25, 1938 to Kasiyuk and Floyd Walluk in Shishmaref, AK. She was the oldest of Floyd Walluk's 13 children. Kasiyuk passed away when Gertie and her sister Adella Mullins, were very young. Floyd married Dora and had 11 more children. Gertie helped to raise many of her siblings while attending school and the Shishmaref Lutheran Church.
In 1955 Gertie met Norman "Walt" Daywalt Miller in Nome Alaska. They were married by Pastor John Maakestad at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Nome and raised six children together: William, Robert, Norman Jr., Deborah "Cassie" in Nome, and Antoinette "Toni" and Sherilee "Leesa" were born later in Anchorage.
Gertie was an accomplished furrier and a very talented beadworker. She worked for David Green Furriers when she was younger and later at the Alaska Native Medical Center. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, berry picking and singing. Gertie met and married Ponipake Ah'Nee of Hawaii in 1985.
Her greatest personal achievements were raising her family, working with Pastor John & Louise Maakestad to help start the Native Outreach Ministry, which later became Alaska Native Lutheran Church and her beautiful fur & beaded creations.
Gertie is preceded in death by her first husband, Walt Miller; her son William James Miller and daughter, Deborah Cassie Kernan. Gertie is survived by her sons Robert Miller of Ocean View HI and Norman Jr of Anchorage AK, and by her daughters, Toni LoMonaco of Anchorage AK, Leesa VanZandt of Spokane WA, as well as grandchildren, Paula Bourdon, Amberly Miller, Michelle Paltrow, Amanda Kashatook, Zeth Kernan, Jordan Kernan, and Devin VanZandt.
Gertie was a member of the Alaska Native Lutheran Church. A celebration of her life and potluck will be at Central/AK Native Lutheran Church on June 14th at 10:00am. Gertie will be laid to rest near her home on Klatt Road and next to her first husband at Angelus Memorial Park in Anchorage, AK on the 14th at 2:00pm. Reverand Mark Allred will be presiding over both services.
