Donald A. Agar passed away at Berkshire Medical Center after a long illness on April 8, 2014, and went to reunite with his wife Joan.
He was born in Pittsfield on August 6, 1932, son of Thomas K. and Margaret B. Agar, and was a 1950 graduate of Pittsfield High School.
After high school, he worked at Southgate Motors, the family business founded by his father.
He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Maryland, New Jersey, Alabama, New Mexico, and Texas.
He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Lenihan, on September 19, 1953, and she accompanied him while he served, working on various military bases.
Don was honorably discharged from Fort Bliss, Texas, and returned to Pittsfield to resume working alongside his father at Southgate Motors. They attained the GMC Truck franchise and his son, David, would eventually join the business as the third generation of Agar men who proudly served and fulfilled the local truck and repair needs.
After over 75 years in business, Don and Dave decided to close the dealership doors in September 2009.
Don was a very lucky man, not only with the lottery, but also having nine lives, as he battled many health problems over the years and always rebounded. He was the ultimate survivor and handled his deteriorating health with dignity, humility and without complaints.
As a person who was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, Don was able to help thousands of other people who suffered with this illness when he discovered the fact that coconut would greatly reduce some of its debilitating symptoms. This information was published widespread in the medical community and Don was extremely proud that he was able to profoundly help others.
He was a very proud Grandpa of his two grandchildren, Kayla and Colton. They were the apples of his eyes and he thrived on every accomplishment they achieved. He loved to hear about their various goals and witnessing them attain them.
Don leaves his son, David M. Agar, of Pittsfield, who was his caregiver and source of strength during his final months; his daughter-in-law, Diane Agar; his granddaughter, Kayla M. Agar of Allston, Mass., and his grandson, Colton M. Agar of Pittsfield. He also leaves a brother, Harold Agar, and sister-in-law, Ginny, of Palm City, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Jean Lenihan of Pittsfield; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his special four-legged friends, Jett, Blue, Milo, and Mia, whom he loved to spend time with.
He is predeceased by his wife, Joan, who passed May 7, 1998; a sister, Janet Ryan, and a grandson, Ross Michael Agar.
