Seagraves (Staff) - Jose Bernal, 19, of Loop, died Sunday evening in Seagraves hospital of burns he received Saturday afternoon while he and his fiancee were cleaning a house in which they planned to live after they were married. Funeral services were to be at 3 p m Tuesday in Loop Baptist Church. Bernal, a farm laborer, suffered second- and third degree burns from his waist up when butane he was using to clean the house exploded, reported Jerry Osborn, a Gaines County sheriff's deputy who investigated the mishap. The fiancee, Juanita Perez, also of Loop, said that Bernal, his younger brother Ray and she were cleaning the house, located seven miles northeast of Loop "Jose was working in the kitchen," she said, "and blowing a window with a butane hose. I was m the living room and Ray in the bedroom "A few minutes late we had an explosion and the house and roof started to fall down." Seeing fire coming from the kitchen, Miss Perez said she ran into it to look for Bernal "Then he called to me from outside." she said. Miss Perez found the brother unhurt in the bedroom, she said. "We both ran outside." she continued, "and we all got into Jose's truck to go to the hospital." Osborn said the Bernal started driving the truck, but on the way to the hospital met another brother and a sister they drove the rest of the way, Osborn said at the hospital. Miss Perez said, "The doctor told me that I would probably lose him, but I didn't want to believe it"' Burial, directed by Webb Funeral Home of Seagraves will be in Loop Cemetery. Bernal was born in Saltillo, Mexico. Aug. 8, 1954. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pablo Bernal of Loop, four brothers. Ray, Miguel, Baldamar and Hernando all of Loop, two sisters. Rosa and Zoila, both of Loop, and his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Rodalfo of Saltillo, Mexico.
