Boy Suffocates in Oats Bin
The Melvin community lost one of its brightest young boys last Saturday when Arthur Meade Arends was smothered to death in an oats bin at the farm home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Arends, three miles west of Melvin.
The boy, aged 12, had gone to the barn at noon to feed the horses. When he pulled the lever to release the oats from the overhead bin, the grain had lodged above and would not flow, so the boy went aloft to release the jam. In some way he fell into the bin and the oats rolled over him, causing suffocation. Becoming alarmed as he did not return, his father went to the barn to search for him. Climbing to the granary he saw the boy's body, almost covered by the oats.
Unable to reach it, he opened the chute below and let out over 400 bushels of the grain, and the boy's body came through the chute with the oats. A physician was called at once, and every effort made to restore consciousness, without avail.
The coroner at Paxton was called. Deputy Coroner Henry Hanson answered the summons, the inquest being held at the Arends residence. A verdict of death by suffocation was rendered.
Arthur Meade Arends was born at Melvin July 10, 1926, his age at death being 12 years, 1 month and 17 days. He was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Arends, and a nephew of Congressman Leslie C. Arends.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2 p.m., and at the Zion Methodist church in Melvin at 2:30 p.m., last Monday, in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. R. Schreiber. Burial was in the Melvin cemetery.
