There is much discussion about how Robert Beasley Earnest acquired Robert Dallas. It is widely believed that Robert Dallas is the biological son of Robert Beasley by someone outside the marriage, possibly a field hand (or slave). Although the 1850 Arkansas Census lists him as living in the home, according to court papers, he was not in Robert Beasley's custody until 1851. Also, he is not listed on the 1860 census, but a slave of the same name is listed in the home while all other slaves lived at Moro in another part of the county. The court record is hand-written and difficult to read, so I will transcribe it to the best of my ability.

July Term 1851 - Calhoun County, Arkanasa

(Unreadable word) Robert C. McCurley and on having asked and obtained parents his petition for letter of guardianship of Robert Dallas, a poor orphan boy. Whereupon It is ordered that said McCurley have (?) to enter into bond with Edmund Tooms and James Gibson his securities in the (pens?) sum of two hundred dollars conditioned according to law; and there upon said Robert C. McCurley, Edmund Tooms, and James Gibson entered into and acknowledged bond accordingly. Whereupon It is ordered that said Robert C. McCurley be appointed guardian of said Robert Dallas. On motion of Robert C. McCurley guardian of Robert Dallas it is ordered that he bind his said ward to Robert Earnest according to law to learn the (business life?) of a farmer. It is ordered that court adjourn until tomorrow morning ten o'clock. (Signed) R. P. Davis Judge, P. C.
