Ethel Inez Akers, 92, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008 in the local hospital in Ardmore following a hard fought battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Inez was born Nov 22, 1916 near Lone Grove, the seventh of nine children, to Pauline and James Franklin Maddox. A 1935 graduate of Lone Grove High School, Inez attended Cameron College at Lawton and finished business school in Ardmore. In her early years she worked as a bookkeeper.
She and George Vatrese Akers were married Sept. 3, 1943 at Abilene, Texas. "Trese" preceded her in death Dec. 16, 1990. A grandson, Wade Alan Ott and six of her siblings also preceded her in death.
Inez was a longtime member of the Eastern Star, serving several times as Worthy Matron as well as every Star Point, District Deputy and Grand Representative. She was awarded her 50-year pin in 1998. She was also a member of the Amaranth and Young At Heart. She loved singing from an early age and enjoyed singing at her church, the Milo Baptist Church and with the Keen Age Choir.
An accomplished seamstress, Inez took pride in making most of her and her childrens' clothing, including two wedding dresses. An active and faithful member of the Milo Baptist Church, she rarely missed a service or activity until failing health prevented her attendance.
She leaves behind three daughters, Leslie Ott and husband, Alan, Oklahoma City, Teresa Wilson and husband, Bill, Broken Arrow and Margaret Akers, Guthrie; six grandchildren, Leah Heatherman and husband, Kevin, Dr. Marla Beach and husband, Brian, Ryan Wilson and wife, Natalie, Sarah Wilson, Daniel Ketch and Rachael Ketch; and eight great-grandchildren with another expected in January. Also surviving are two sisters, Janet Doss, Maysville, and Charlene Gray, Modesto, Calif., numerous nieces, nephews, her church family and a host of friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at the Milo Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Mike Johnston and Rev. Bob Keck. Burial will follow at the Woodford Cemetery.
