THOMAS H. BASSETT, 86, died at 9:35 a.m. Jan. 10, 2004 at Van Wert Manor Nursing Home, following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Jennings Township, Van Wert County, to DeWitt S. and Hannah J. Owens Bassett, who preceded him in death. On June 2, 1949, he married Lois Price, who died Oct. 15, 2002.

Mr. Bassett retired from Federal Mogul in 1982 and was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Salem United Presbyterian Church, Venedocia. He was a 1935 graduate of Spencerville High School. He was a member of American Legion Post 191 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 6772, both in Spencerville. He was a World War II veteran, serving four years in the Army during the Pacific operation.

Survivors include a son, Thomas J. (Connie) Bassett of Van Wert; a daughter, Linda B. (Denny) Schumm of Van Wert; a sister, Dorothy (Paul) Cemmings of Lima; three grandsons, Lucas Bassett Schumm, Brian Thomas Bassett and Nathan Michael Bassett, all of Van Wert; and a granddaughter, Bryn Catharine Schumm of Van Wert.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Bassett; and a sister, M. Jane VanEman.

Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cowan & Son Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Wendy S. Pratt will officiate. Burial will be in Venedocia Cemetery, Venedocia, with military rites by the American Legion 191 and VFW 6772, Spencerville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Presbyterian Church.
