SISTER MARY THOMAS LILLIS, O.P. Former Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, died on Saturday, February 19, 2005 at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Fremont. She was 91 years old. Born on November 29, 1913 in Portland, Oregon, Sister Mary Thomas was a Dominican Sister for 73 years. Sister was elected to Congregational leadership in 1955 and from 1973 - 1985 served as Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters and also President of Queen of the Holy Rosary College. Her previous ministries included secondary teaching and administration in schools staffed by the Dominican Sisters, including Immaculata Academy, Portland, Oregon; Immaculate Conception Academy, San Francisco and Sacred Heart High School, Los Angeles. Sister also served for a number of years in Sister Formation. She was Prioress at Saint Catherine Military School, Anaheim and was a resident at St. Edward's Parish, Newark before returning to the Motherhouse. For five years Sister served as Director of the Dominican Study Center (1985 - 1991). Sister Mary Thomas is survived by a nephew, William Riverman (Lois Joyce) and a niece, Jean MacDonald (Ken) and by grandnieces and grandnephews, Matthew, Kristen, Joel, Paul and Benjamin Riverman and Mark, Bruce and Joni MacDonald. She is also survived by other relatives in Oregon, her Dominican Sisters and many friends, colleagues and former students. Viewing Friday, February 25th, 12 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Dominican Sisters Motherhouse, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont. The mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 26th at 10 a.m. at Saint Joseph Parish Church, 43148 Mission Blvd., Fremont. Burial in the Dominican Sisters' cemetery will follow immediately after the mass. Memorials may be made to the Dominican Sisters' Circles of Caring or the Mother Pia Backes Education Fund, 43326 Mission Blvd., Fremont, CA 94539.
