Pvt William M. Abernathy
Served with Co.B 17th Miss. Inf. CSA Longstreet's Corps. During the war for Southern Independence of 1861-65.
He enlisted with his older brother Frank at Holly Springs MS. at age 17. Both brothers served the Confedercy well and after the war they moved to Texas Were William died in 1911 at age 68.

There has been an Abernathy practicing law in Collin County continuously since
1876. The Abernathy brothers moved from Holly Springs, Mississippi, to McKinney
then. The three brothers, Mercer Green, William Meshack, and G. E. (Ed), were
all attorneys. Abernathy Brothers Law Firm opened in McKinney in 1876. William
Meshack Abernathy served in the Confederate army. After the war he walked home
to Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1868 and from
Cumberland University's law school in 1871. He married Lucy Roberts and
practiced law in Ashland, Mississippi, for several years before moving to Texas.

McKinney for many years as one of the early
fire chiefs of the volunteer department; he also served as president of the
Texas Fireman's Association. He helped organize Saint Peter's Episcopal Church
in McKinney.
