Robert Cocke, Sr.
Robert Winston Cocke, Sr., of Wilburton, died Wednesday at his home.
Funeral services will be 9:00 a.m., Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Udell Wolff officiating. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Wilburton.
Born February 2, 1912 in Stigler, he was the son of Robert E. and Agnes Young Cocke. He graduated from Quinton High School as Valedictorian. He then attended Oklahoma Military School in Claremore and A & M College in Stillwater. He married Virginia Tirey on December 19, 1930. Winston opened the first airport and flight training school in Wilburton. During World War II he was a flight instructor for the U.S. Air Force. He spent the remainder of his life in teh Quinton and Wilburton area. He and his father R.E. Cocke were owners of the Cocke-Hardware & Furniture from 1939 to 1950. In 1950 Winston was granted the Pontiac Automobile franchise and owner and operated the Cocke Motor Co for 20 years - shortly before he closed the Pontiac Agency, Winston purchased the Baker Hardware and Furniture Store. The same store he and his father had owned. Winston was operating this store at the time of his death.
Winston was a member of the wilburton Masonic Lodge #141, a 32-degree Mason of the McAlester Consistary and was a Shriner. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Cocke of Latimer Nursing Home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ann Cocke of Wilburton; a daughter and son-in-law, Anna Doris and Jim Pirtle of Waggoner; seven grandchildren, Robert and Laura Cocke of Norman, John Cocke of Tulsa, William and Layne Cocke of Wilburton, Charles and Donna Cocke of Norman, Jamie and Mark Bruntzel of Broken Arrow, Jay and Tracy Pirtle of Tyler, Texas and Janna and Mike Wilson of Birmingham, Mich.; thirteen great grandchildren, Wesley, Ben and Alyse of Norman, Elizabeth and Adam of Wilburton, Bailey, Macy and Jake of Norman, Sarah of Broken Arrow, Katie and Drew of Tyler and Lucy and Sam of Birmingham, Mich. And two nieces and a nephew.
Pallbearers include Robert Cocke III, John Cocke, William Cocke, Charles Cocke, Mark Bruntzel, Jay Pirtle, Wesley Cocke and Ben Cocke.
Honorary pallbearers include Monty McAlester, Al Collins, Jasper Morrison, Al Smith, Forrest Hamilton, Charles Adams, John Shero, Wayne Russell, Fred Roye, Kensel Tucker, Duane Woods, Bill Hill, Mark Lauerman and Hoyt Duncan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Florence Stovall and Louise Willingham.
